1000 Books Before Kindergarten
MPHPL encourages families and caregivers to read 1000 books with their children before they enter kindergarten. Parents and caregivers can register your prekindergarten age child for our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program! To get started, visit your preferred MPHPL location to receive your welcome folder and paper logs, or register online.
About the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program
This program promotes positive and nurturing early experiences by encouraging parents and caregivers to read aloud daily to their children. Aim for 20 minutes of reading each day to make it fun and exciting! If you read just one book a day, you will read approximately 365 books in a year, 730 books in two years, and 1,095 books in three years!
- For every 100 books read, participants will receive a small ‘way to go!’ prize*, which can be picked up at your preferred MPHPL location.
- Names of participants will be featured on our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten bimonthly program guide page.
- After reaching the milestone of 1000 books read, each child will have the opportunity to have their picture taken; this picture may be included in the program guide and may be used in future marketing materials, both online and in print.
Super Sibling Reader
Any sibling who reads 50 books to a brother or sister enrolled in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program will also receive a prize. The starter folder includes a log for the sibling to track the books they read. Once they complete the log, they can visit the library to claim their prize. Each sibling is eligible to fill out one log and receive one prize for the duration of their brother or sister’s journey in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.
*Please note that prizes will be offered at each level, but the type of prize available can vary depending on the current funding of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative.
