MPHPL is partnering with the St. Joseph County Department of Health to promote their important Radon-Free Homes Initiative.

According to the St. Joseph County Department of Health, one in four homes in the area has high radon levels. Long-term exposure to radon gas is responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year. Radon gas can seep into any home, whether it is brand new or hundreds of years old. Because radon is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, the only way to determine its presence is through testing.
“We are happy to announce that all MPHPL locations will be radon kit distribution sites. Providing radon testing kits to residents of St. Joseph County is the first step in determining whether a house is safe from radon exposure. After sending in a completed test, residents will be contacted by the St. Joseph County Department of Health regarding test results and what to do if high levels are found,” said Jennifer Ludwig, MPHPL Director of Patron Services.
The goal of the Radon-Free Home Initiative is to raise awareness about the dangers of radon, educate residents of St. Joseph County, and provide free screening, testing, and possible mitigation for qualifying homeowners.
