Job Description
The purpose of this position is to provide excellent customer service and positive leadership to Youth Services Team Leaders and associates. This role is responsible for assisting families in growing readers by fostering curiosity and a desire to read. This person will equally engage children of all abilities and backgrounds through patience, creativity and enthusiasm to create a welcoming, vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.

LOCATION: Mishawaka Library (location subject to change)
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services Coordinator
HOURS: Full Time
- 40 hours
- At least one Saturday per month and occasional evenings to meet scheduling and programming needs
WAGE: $35.70
Essential Job Duties
- Serve on the MPHPL Administrative Team
- Promote the library’s collections and services in a welcoming, friendly and helpful manner
- Assist patrons of all ages with reference and reading activities
- Demonstrate leadership skills and positive role modeling for all staff
- Encourage a consistent high standard of customer service
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels at Youth Services desks; allocate movement of staff to other locations to cover shifts as necessary
- Interview, coach, manage, counsel and develop direct reports
- Respond swiftly and professionally to resolve patron conflict equitable and tactfully address those involved in inappropriate behavior
- Develop, implement, oversee, and evaluate internal programming and literacy initiatives for children and teens
- Serve on the Reading Challenges Committee
- Conduct class visits and youth-focused internal library tours
- Assist with collection development activities
- Participate in professional development to remain informed of current trends, emerging issues and best practices in public libraries
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education plus 15 hours of college level Library Science credit (LC4); Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) preferred
- Extensive knowledge of child development, early literacy skills and age-appropriate reading materials and resources
- Two years of library supervisory experience
Work Skills
- Good communication skills and ability to multitask
- Strong commitment to customer service with emphasis on families and educators
- Flexibility and creativity; experience in planning and conducting youth programming
- Ability to instruct patrons and staff in library technology; ability to learn new technology quickly
Physical Requirements
- Ability to pull a loaded cart.
- Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds
- Ability to frequently stand, bend or stoop
- Ability, stamina, and balance to perform basic movements frequently
