September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

Signing up for a library card provides access to technology, multimedia content and educational programming that transforms lives and strengthens communities. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held in September. During this month, the American Library Association and local libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card.

This year the Library Card Sign-up Month 2021 Honorary Chair is Marley Dias.

Dias is the 16-year-old founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign and author of Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You! She is the host and executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.

Dias joins libraries in promoting the power of a library card. “A library card is the ticket you need to travel across the globe. It allows you to experience stories that can connect you to diverse and empowering experiences,” said Dias.

MPHPL offers a variety of card types.

Resident Library Card

Residents or real property taxpayers of Penn and Harris townships are eligible to apply for a free MPHPL library card.

Visit any of our locations to sign up and obtain your new card immediately.

Minors (under 18-years-old) seeking a library card will need to be present with their parent/guardian, who will provide the ID requirements and sign for financial responsibility for items borrowed. If the parent/guardian has an MPHPL card, it must be in good standing. Minors under 12 years of age may not check out DVDs.

In order to protect your identity and borrowing privileges, we ask you to provide proof of identity. Only you are authorized to use this card; card sharing is prohibited.

Digital Cards

Digital Cards allow you to check out digital library materials and use our online databases to find information. You can visit any MPHPL location to convert your Digital Card to a Full Access Card and take advantage of our other physical resources.

You do not need to apply for a digital card if you already have a library card with MPHPL. You can use your existing card to access Overdrive and our other digital products.

By registering for an Adult Digital Card, you are verifying that you are a resident within the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library service area and that you are 18 years of age or older.

Your Adult Digital Card number will be generated right away and the card number will be emailed to you.

Student Digital Card

Student Digital Cards allow you to check out digital library materials and get homework help with databases containing full-text magazine articles.

You do not need to apply for a digital card if you already have a library card with MPHPL. You can use your existing card to access Overdrive.

If you are under 13 years of age, please do not use your school provided e-mail account.

By registering for a Student Digital Card, you are verifying that you are a student attending a school within the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library service area.
