About the Challenge
Books Before… is a set of programs designed to grow with the reader. Our 60 Books Before High School program is intended for middle school students in grades 6-8.
Why 60 Books?
- The program was inspired by the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.
- Completing a book gives students a sense of accomplishment and builds confidence.
- Reading explores real-world issues, such as friendship and peer pressure.
- Remembering storylines, characters, and plots enhances memory skills that will benefit students as they progress in their academic career.
How it Works
- Enroll by visiting the Youth Services desk at any MPHPL location or use the online registration form.
- Using the reading log, write down the title of each book you complete and give it a ranking (1-5 stars).
- For every 10 books you complete, bring your reading log to the Youth Services desk at any MPHPL location to receive a prize.
- Participant names will be included in our bimonthly program guide each time a level is achieved.
Prize Information
- Participants receive a gift card upon reaching the 10, 30 and 50 book levels. Gift card selection varies.
- For those who reach the 20 and 40 book levels, participants can choose a free book from our prize book baskets.
- After reading 60 books, participants will receive a certificate of achievement along with a free book.
